One more coach on their way down under

Although, I’m not quite sure if New Zealand counts as down under. We’ll just say the southern hemisphere to be safe.

If you’re unfamiliar with Ken Cools, here’s a brief bio. Ken is a former national BMX champion who started coaching BMX in 1989. The past 12 years Ken has spent running clinics through his company, Camp Cools which has seen roughly 75, 000 participants take part. Ken is one of the premiere coaches in BMX and counts Bubba Harris and sister (and Albertan Olympic medal hopeful) Samantha Cools amongst the athletes he coaches.

Long story short, New Zealand has the number 1 ranked male AND female BMX riders in the world and they specifically requested Ken as their coach for the run up to the Beijing Olympics.

Ken has signed a contract with BikeNZ which will see him coaching the BMX team through till the end of the Beijing Olympics, at which point his contract will reassessed. Coincidentally, Ken will join another former Canadian National champion on the BikeNZ staff as former national road coach Jacques Landry has been under the employ of BikeNZ for several years now.

Ken will continue to instruct at camps in Canada throughout the summer and will travel to New Zealand as needed.

Alberta has a thriving BMX scene and the fact that New Zealand has looked to it to pick their coaching staff is a strong testament to this. Coincidentally once more, Ken’s signing with BikeNZ comes the same week as the Alberta Bicycle Association plans to pilot the first ever BMX NCCP course offered in Canada. Students will attend seminars this coming weekend in Calgary which will see them make the first step towards becoming Canada’s very first NCCP certified BMX coaches.

An exciting week for BMX and BMX coaches to say the very least. Bike Alberta wishes Ken the best of luck in his new venture and encourages everyone to check out his website, www.kencools.com
