Coast to Coast Against Cancer

Neil Duncan and John Murray are two Calgary residents and avid cyclists who will be two of the 50 riders crossing Canada in support of Canadian children with cancer. Along the way Neil & John will be joined by hundreds of stage riders who will ride in shorter rides in communities across the Country. With every pedal stroke cyclists will raise money for kids and families fighting this debilitating disease. Along with raising funds, Neil and John hope to raise awareness and promote a healthy lifestyle.

Starting in Vancouver, the route visits many of Canada’s 17 pediatric cancer centers where cyclists will meet with media and the cancer community to share inspiring stories of strength and hope on this historic ride. And finally, after 7,600 km and 19 days, these courageous voyagers will dip their bike wheels in the Atlantic off Halifax on June 20, 2008.

Last year Neil road in the Tour for Kids Alberta as part of Team Schulich Engineering where they raised nearly $15,000 to help send children with cancer and their families to summer camp in Alberta. The ride raised $150,000 for the Kids Cancer Care Foundation of Alberta. Inspired by the stories and energy of the wonderful people dedicated to this cause, Neil was drawn to become a rider in this National event.

Cancer is the leading cause of non-accidental death in children. More children die of cancer each year than asthma, cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy, congenital anomalies and pediatric AIDS combined. Cancer affects children at the most vulnerable stages of their lives, and robs them, and their families, of the laughter and joy that should be part of every childhood.

Through your support we can make a difference to the more than 10,000 children in Canada living with cancer, and the 1,500 new children who receive this diagnosis annually.

Funds raised will go to national and local programs to support childhood cancer. During the first year of the event 50% of the funds raised will go to developing national medical and care standards in partnership with the doctors and nurses from the 17 pediatric oncology centers across Canada. The remaining 50% of the donations will support each of the pediatric oncology units individually.

The Sears National Kids Cancer Ride is brought to you by the Coast to Coast Against Cancer Foundation, a volunteer-based organization that makes no use of professional fundraisers. Whenever possible they leverage corporate sponsorships to ensure individual donations raised through their events go directly to the childhood charities they support.
