Win a Free Entry into the Dirt Series MTB Camp

Posted in Bike Clubs, MTB on April 29, 2009 by bikealberta

The Dirt Series Mountain Bike Camps is starting their season in just a couple weeks, and heading to Calgary in mid May for two different camps. The weekend of May 16-17 will focus on the women, in a two day women’s only camp, geared to beginner, intermediate, and advanced riders. On Monday, May 18, they’ll open it up to the men too, offering a co-ed camp again geared towards all levels of riders.

Professional coaches like Lorraine Blancher, Lisa Lefroy and Tera Card will teach both camps, while Andreas Hestler will travel out to join in for the Monday edition. This is an amazing opportunity to start your season off right, polishing off your current skills, and adding even more new ones to your list.

And here’s the best part: you can win an entry and go for free. If you’re interested, send an email to , including your choice of camp, what you’d hope to learn, and the reason you think you should win. On May 4th, the Dirt Series will read through all the entries, and choose the winning one.

So, send in an entry if you like, pass this on to a friend who you think would love the camp, and otherwise get ready for a fantastic riding season overall.
For more information on the camps, see the pinkbike posting here:

Coulee Cruiser Three Race Week End 2009

Posted in Bike Clubs, MTB, Racing, Road on April 27, 2009 by bikealberta

The 2009 Coulee Cruiser Stage Race will comprise of a Saturday Road Hill Climb Time Trial, a Saturday afternoon Coulee Cruiser Mountain Bike Race and a Sunday Road Race.Click here for race brochure.

The mountain bike course was set and flagged today. It will be a fun fast flowing course of 6 km with three major climbs that aren’t “gonna-kill you-hike-a-bike”. Believe it or not there will be sections of “rest” and some nice descents. Just keep your fingers crossed for some wind and warm dry weather to dry things up a bit. Remember the coulees dry up quickly… the worst section was the final stretch of road to the finish line. We will be posting course conditions through out the week so stay tuned!

All race participants must be a member of an ABA associated bike club and have either a valid 2009 ABA race licence or a day licence (good for two races only) which can be purchase for the races on site.

NOTE: As of April 19 the late entry fee of $10 will be waived. Disregard the fee noted in the race brochure for late entries. Sorry for the confusion.

If you require more information beyond what is available on-line then click the tab “Contact Us” on the left of the screen and send us an email or call Phil Rayner at 403-381-9466.

Mical’s first World Cup race of the season went well as she moved up from her 64th start position to a solid 52nd finishing place. Mical is slowly buidling up her season after spending part of the winter in Fort McMurray so this is a very positive result for her this early in the year.

Great job Mical!

In general, volunteers will be asked to be available from 8am – 5pm on June 13, 2009, however, registration takes place on Friday June 13, 2009 from 3pm – 9pm. Every volunteer will get a T-shirt from the event and lunch during the event.

This race is part of the Canada Cup series held across Canada between May and August 2009. This is the first time it will be held in Edmonton and the first time that an event like this will take place in the heart of the River Valley.

The following positions are required:

Course Marshals
Course Marshals are required for the following reasons:
1) To help to ensure spectators/bystanders do not wander onto the course during the race.
2) To radio in any requests for medical assistance due to injury and to radio in any DNF’s if someone happens to report to you they won’t be finishing the race.
3) Help provide encouragement to athletes as they race by!

Course marshals are stationed in groups of 2 at various locations around the course. Lunch will be provided. Course marshals will be required between 8am and 4pm. It is recommended you bring a lawn chair so you don’t have to stand the whole time. Any noise makers/cheering is appreciated!!

Set up (or take down) of the event includes setting up the tents and tables at various locations – sign in, feed station, finish line/timing, post race food tables. After the event, all tables require a wipe down before putting away.
Take down will also include removing course markings along the course (wooden stakes, taping and signs). It will also be necessary to make sure the area is clean of garbage from the event. Garbage cans and bags will be provided.

Parking Attendants
There are two parking lots near the start of the race course that we require people to be stationed at to help keep the parking organized. Basically, you will be asked to direct people to open parking spots or to kindly refuse entry if the parking area is full. This position will likely only require help until noon.

Registration of the athletes will take place on Friday June 12, 2009 at United Cycle. We require volunteers to check-in the athletes when they arrive and hand out the event package. Registration will take place from 3pm to 9 pm and dinner (sandwiches or pizza….) will be provided.

For Immediate Release

Friday, April 24, 2009Edmonton

Alberta MTB Racing is proud to announce that the fourth stop in the Canada Cup Cross Country mountain bike series will be held in the heart of Edmonton’s river valley on June 13th, 2009.  Centered around the Kinsmen Sports Field House, which was home to the 1978 Commonwealth Games, the MTB course will loop in the shadows of the University of Alberta and the historic Alberta Legislative Building.

In its second year of race organizing, Alberta MTB Racing has big plans for Edmonton’s first national level mountain bike race.

United Cycle has increased its support of racing in Alberta by becoming the Edmonton Canada Cup Title Sponsor.   United Cycle has a long history of being involved in the cycling community, from regional rides, to charity events, and now to provincial and national level racing.

In an effort to increase awareness and participation for the event, Alberta MTB Racing is happy to announce SONiC 102.9 as an Elite Sponsor of the event.  Join the SONiC Intern Army as they cheer on the riders as at the finish line and hang out in the party tent doling out the SONiC swag.

Thanks to the Elite Sponsorship of Intact Insurance, participants from across the country will compete for a prize purse of over $5000 CDN and coveted international ranking points (UCI C2 classification).

There will be extra motivation to perform for those athletes looking to make the Canadian National Team as the race is part of the selection criteria.

The Edmonton Mountain Bike Alliance, in cooperation with the City of Edmonton, has graciously volunteered their trail building services to improve the race course circuit.  With the race falling right in the middle of Bike Month, extra attention is expected.  Musical entertainment will be provided by a total of four live bands.
